So, you want to learn to kite surf?

NSWKBA does not directly organize lessons for the public however we do try to get all the relevant information together to help make kitesurfing easier for you to get into.

We insist that you get lessons from a qualified IKO instructor. Most of these lessons are handled by your local kite shop or private instructors. To find you local shop take a look at the Shop Map and see where the closest is. Also we hold a list of our members who are IKO qualified, current and insured to give you lessons. Click here.

Before undertaking expensive lessons we recommend you get some practice in with flying a 2 line kite. (like the girl to the right) this will mean you have the basic skills when starting to learn to fly bigger kites.

Before learning to kite surf there are various skills that most instructors will want you to have before taking you onto the water. The main skill that you will be asked to do is flying a kite, sounds easy we hear you say but if you have not flown a power kite before using bar then you may be in for a surprise!

If you are reading this guide expecting to be able to get on the water or fly a kite surfing kite then this is the wrong place for you! However by following the steps outlined in the following sections we aim to get you quickly up to a standard where you can start to take lessons and get the most out of them. This will greatly reduce the amount of time learning to fly a kite surfing kite which means you'll be up and riding quicker and safer.

Use the menus on the left to progress through the lessons at your own pace, ensure you read and understand all the lessons and can accomplish them with ease and safety.

Always remember there are other beach users and kite flying can be dangerous if not respected, please always take care of what is downwind of you, don't continue to fly your kite if there is a problem and always know your limits with the wind and conditions.
